Greg Olson, age 61, passed away on Monday, Aug. 12, 2019 at his home in Downers Grove, Ill.
Born June 9, 1958 in Hinsdale, Ill., he was the son of the late Betty J. (Presley) Olson.
To put it plainly, Mr. Olson was a gearhead. He spent every spare minute following his passion. He spent countless hours working in the garage behind the house restoring classic automobiles and countless more fine tuning his race car. Mr. Olson put himself through trade school, earning his degree in welding to help further and finance his hobby. Most people kick up their heels and blow off a little steam on a Friday night to celebrate the end of a long week. Not hom. His idea of a good time on Friday was getting his car in tip top shape for the track on Saturday.
Mr. Olson was a fixture at the Sante Fe Speedway. Although the track has been gone for nearly 20 years, the Sante Fe faithful still remember watching him turn laps every Saturday without fail. Increasing health problems eventually took their toll on him, forcing him to have to stop doing what he loved so much.
Family was very important. For many years he, along with his brother, helped look after their aging mother. That brother, Garry (Phyllis) Olson of Roselle, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty J. Olson; and by his aunt, Virginia Hollingsworth.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2019 at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan.
